A MMORPG set in Games Workshop’s Warhammer 40,000 universe has been announced at E3 for PC, Xbox One and PS4 but, er, it’s probably not what you’re expecting. WH40K: Eternal Crusade will see the Space Marines, Chaos Space Marines, Orks and Eldar duking it out in a “persistent online war” to control a planet, and all sounds quite PlanetSide-y.
“Thousands” of players will duke it out over locations and resources in “truly massive conflicts”, Behaviour says, on foot and in vehicles like Rhino APCs, Predator tanks and Battlewagons. It’ll be a third-person, over-the shoulder affair and mention of “precision gunplay” (as well as melee with “excruciating finishers”) suggests combat may be based more on skill than stats.
Darksiders developer Vigil Games was once working on a more-conventional 40K MMORPG named Dark Millenium Online. This later became a single-player RPG as owner THQ struggled and then, well, THQ went down, taking Vigil and the game with it.
Honestly, a territory control eternal war sort of game sounds the perfect form for a 40K MMORPG, but coming from Behaviour? That’s quite curious. Still, it seems confident it can pull this off.
“Eternal Crusade’s team are all MMO development veterans and with the support of Behaviour’s 20+ years of experience this is going to be the online Warhammer 40,000 universe game that fans have been dreaming of for years!” Behaviour’s Miguel Caron said in the announcement. Huh!
Warhammer 40,000: Eternal Crusade is slated to launch for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in “late 2015.” Sadly, no screenshots or trailers accompanied the announcement, only a logo.
