thats one way to look at it. another is to make a fantasy game that looks very realistic so you can pretend that maybe its posibe for those things to happ

the entire point of games for some nerds is to get away from reality so stay in the stylization side of the uncanny valley

The big game and movie houses won’t release anything that hits down the valley, so most of us hasn’t seen any real examples of this, but if you saw something that really fits down there you would probably be abhorred

Bravo! I’ve been discussing this with some classmates recently. I expressed my much greater fondness for stylized games, mostly for stylization sake. Didn’t we all get thrilled by video games because of the strange places they can take us? If I wanted to play Call Of Duty, I’d join the military and get paid lots of money (Poor example, as CoD doesn’t involve actual dying
).

I feel bad for have not knowing what the uncanny valley was XD thanks for the history lesson. I definitely prefer my characters stylized! I play video games to be immersed in a new world, not thrown into a stimulated version of this one -_-

I’m not sure I would call Final Fantasy stylized. I mean, it’s definitely not realistic, but it strives for a “human” look. It’s just waxy, fashion blind magical humans, but still humans as we know them.

Theory(if you can call it that xD): Maybe if some studio anonced a movie that was CGI AND did not tell it, then maybe…. or maybe not.. it should of cause be kind of “photorealistic” something like Pixar movies are obviously not Photo-real but maybe if it was close to the other side of the uncanny valley, we wouldent notice? if i make my mind up, i even dont think that myself but someone had to say this, not?

halo/final fantasy series probably weren’t the best examples. Taking a look at that live action halo game teaser doesn’t quite strike the stylization plan.. Square-enix tries so damn hard these days to make their games look like a fashion show.
My examples would be the characters from Little big planet and Machinarium.
The uncanny valley got to movies even more. Dropping any names would result in a flame, but cgi-driven movies are a lot less realistic than the old ones, fact. Human eye knows.

I have to admit, that was part of WoW’s appeal for me, too. I tend to prefer games on the stylized end of things, in part because of the uncanny valley and not just with regards to humans. Animals and environments that don’t act to my expectations also become turn-offs. Makes me somewhat uneasy that there’s this obsessive push towards realism, to the exclusion of more stylized representations, which I fear will eventually become a rarity — relegated to servicing “kiddy” markets, as cartoons are
