Day Z mod boosts ArmA 2 sales with zombies

The hardcore military simulation ArmA 2 has seen its sales spike to five times the norm, thanks to the recently-released mod called Day Z. Why such a big jump in sales? Well, it seems that as much as folks like realistic military shooters, throwing zombies into the mix–at least according to developer Bohemia Interactive’s Marek Spanel–”creates an experience so addictive that I believe it can stand as a gaming experience on its own.”

“There’s no doubt that the thrilling Day Z mod currently drives Arma 2 Combined Operations sales on Steam,” Spanel told Kotaku in a recent interview. “Sales have increased almost fivefold from how they were before Day Z’s Alpha release!”

Bohemia Interactive will also be supporting Day Z in the next ArmA 2 update, something that the creator of the mod (known as Rocket) is sure to appreciate. “We’re more than happy to assist DayZ in any suitable way and considering the mod’s popularity we are committed to do some related work in the next Arma 2 update (1.61),” Spanel said. When asked about the extent of the support the developer would provide he noted that the zombie mod is still in a relatively early state. “DayZ was released just a few weeks ago as a tech demo/proof of concept and it’s still at Alpha status so until we know where the project intends to go it’s hard to commit to anything specifically,” he said.

With ArmA 3 already in the works, Spanel was also asked if Day Z would also be playable using the new game’s engine. Though it’s certainly a strong possibility, he estimates that Day Z support in ArmA 3 could be “one year or more from now.” “There are many aspects involved, for example the environment and different assets in Arma 3, new engine features etc.,” he said. “It’s important to understand that there is still a long way to go even after Arma 3 is out until mods are properly configured, ported and matured onto the new platform.”

Those interested in the mod can get more details (and download the alpha test) from the official Day Z website. Just remember, you’ll need a copy of ArmA 2 to play.

Def Jam Rapstar studio in financial trouble

4mm Games, the studio behind Def Jam Rapstar, is on the verge of closing. Studio head Jamie King says the company is “rather starved for money,” and stretching itself thin as it tries to resolve a Rapstar legal dispute while tending to its own staff as well.

“We have not got any new funding and obviously we need to resolve everything with Rapstar,” King told GamesIndustry.biz. “And we’ve also got to eat. I get very annoyed at times, I would like there to be a way out of it but I don’t know if that’s going to happen.”

Def Jam Rapstar ballooned to a larger scope, but was met with sluggish sales. King calls the launch “disappointing.” 4mm’s other games, a project with UK developer Jagex, a National Dog Show game, and an Alliance of Action Sports browser game, haven’t been met with success. The dog show game had no money for marketing, and the other two have been shelved — despite the action sports title being nearly done.

Now 4mm’s legal problems with EMI over song authorization in Rapstar prevents it from getting more funding. King is hoping to get more projects in the mobile and tablet space to stay afloat. He’s still optimistic about the future and plans to stay in the business, but it’s looking increasingly doubtful that business will be with 4mm.

Atari has closed Test Drive Unlimited dev Eden [update]

Update: Atari has provided Shacknews with a statement, saying that Eden Games is not closed. However, the company does confirm that it has “divested” from the studio: “Our earnings statement contained a report about the divestment of Eden Studios. We want to make it clear that the studio has not closed and that we will continue to support the console and PC games of Eden Studios, notably Test Drive Unlimited 2, while this process is underway. The divestment is in line with our previously stated strategy of exploiting our popular intellectual property library on mobile devices, where he have seen strong initial success, and via online games and licensing.”

Original Story: Test Drive Unlimited developer Eden Games was as good as dead after owner Atari laid off most of the staff last year, but now it’s official. In its financial results for last year, filed this week, the publisher confirmed it’s been selling off what assets remain.

The results (via Edge) tell the sorry truth, if you want every last ounce of financial jargon.

It’s all been downhill since Atari fired 51 of the French studio’s 80 employees in May, sparking a symbolic strike. Test Drive Unlimited 2 wasn’t received at all well, see, and Atari had ended up issuing free DLC in apology for its many “issues.”

The Test Drive brand lives on, though. Atari has tasked Slightly Mad Studios with track-bound affair Test Drive: Ferrari Racing Legends, which is coming soon to PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.

A small number of former Eden members went on to found indie studio Blossom Mind.
