Max Payne 3 arcade modes detailed

Max Payne 3 is sure to be a dark, cinematic adventure with noir overtones, with the type of depressing story that could put you in a blue funk. If you need a break from all that negativity, though, the game will feature two arcade modes to rack up points like an old-school video game, and reward your success with multiplayer benefits.

Score Attack Mode is straight-forward enough. Completing a level in single-player opens up the ability to play it in Score Attack, getting points for both individual hits and full kills. New York Minute returns from previous Max Payne games, running down a 60-second clock and giving bonus time for each downed enemy. These single-player modes add bonuses that can be used in the multiplayer as well. High scores net you extra XP, as well as character unlocks like Fabiana Branco and Passos.

Max Payne 3 is hitting stores next Tuesday, May 15.

Max Payne 3 launch trailer is working through some issues

Max Payne has been through some tough times, though he probably should’ve seen that coming when he looked at his own name. Max Payne 3 takes the character to Sao Paulo, Brazil on business. Unfortunately for Max Payne, his business is getting shot at.

The new trailer is cinematic as you’d expect from Rockstar, complete with plenty of slow-mo and melodramatic narration. At this point we almost hope the game ends with Max sipping margaritas on a beach, because come on; the guy’s got to catch a break sometime, right?

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 PS3 bundle announced

Hey you! Don’t own a PS3 and one of the best-selling games of all time? Sony has announced a brand new SKU for retail: the “Limited Edition PS3 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Bundle.” The $299 package includes a 320GB PS3 system and a copy of Modern Warfare 3. Given a 320GB system normally costs $299 by itself, it’s like getting the game for free.

“Right out of the box, you will have instant and free access to the action-packed Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 online multiplayer experience through PlayStation Network,” the PlayStation.Blog notes, taking a jab at Xbox Live’s $60 annual fee for multiplayer. “This is a great option for those of you who already own a PS3 or for those who want to become a part of the PlayStation family.”

While it is a “deal” compared to the vanilla system, one can’t be disheartened by the clear lack of effort placed into this bundle. Microsoft, for example, launched its own Modern Warfare 3-branded Xbox 360 system back when the game launched. For $349, the bundle offered a 320GB Xbox 360 with two controllers, headset, and a genuinely “limited edition” design.

Call of Duty Elite has 2 million paying subscribers

Activision’s Call of Duty Elite subscription service now has two million paying members, growing by 33% since the end of January. With a $50 price tag, Activision has managed to squeeze out $100 million in additional revenue from Call of Duty players.

More than 10 million gamers have registered for Call of Duty Elite, meaning only 20 percent of players have opted to convert to the premium version of the service, in spite of an aggressive “season of content” provided to paying members.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 is launching later this year, and will introduce Elite 2.0. Will Activision be able to continue growing the service for its second year?

Modern Warfare 3 free ‘Face Off’ mode on Xbox 360 next week

With all the hubbub over Call of Duty’s “season of content” for Modern Warfare 3, it’s nice to see Activision throw non-paying fans a bone with some free DLC. Coming May 15th is the new Face Off mode–created specifically for 1v1 and 2v2 battles. Best of all, two Face Off maps–Aground and Erosion–will be free to all Xbox 360 players, not just Call of Duty Elite members.

The free maps will also be available on PS3, One of Swords confirmed. While not yet dated, PS3 DLC has typically arrived about a month after the Xbox 360 version. PC players will probably have to wait a bit longer.

In addition to the free DLC, Activision has outlined its plans for Content Collection 2, the next big batch of for-pay DLC. Collection 2 will be available on May 22nd for non-Elite members on Xbox 360, and will include all the content released since Collection 1. Once again, PS3 and PC owners will have to wait for their turn to pay.

Embedded video will not work in the GameFly app.
