Wii Fit continues to rack up sales around the world. Enterbrain has announced that Wii Fit officially broke the 3 million sold barrier in Japan. The current sales total in Japan as of January 4th sits at 3,039,233 million. For those wondering, Wii Fit took 58 weeks to make it to 3 million sold. If this isn’t more proof of the long-tail strategy that Nintendo always touts, I don’t know what is!

So…we don’t get the new Bionic Commando on Wii, but we get to dress up in Bionic Commando gear in Dead Rising? That makes no sense to me…

After getting shot somewhere in the neighborhood of nine times, rapper 50 Cent has learned the value of taking cover in a firefight–knowledge that will be imparted to players of 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand. Who said that video games can’t teach life lessons?

Some new screenshots and a trailer help drive the message home, preparing you for the February 24 release of the Swordfish Studios-developed PS3 and Xbox 360 title.

Yes, February 24–publisher THQ has delayed the game past its prior January date.

Gearbox Software’s squad-based Aliens shooter will be released within the next three months according to a release schedule from publisher Sega’s European branch.

The schedule lists a “Q1 2009″ release for Aliens: Colonial Marines, which was originally expected in late 2008. While Sega was unable to tell VideoGamer if that was calendar Q1 (January 1-March 31) or fiscal Q1 (April 1-June 30), April will see Sega begin its 2010 fiscal year, suggesting that the date applies to the calendar year.

Rumors that the game was cancelled emerged…

2K Game’s narrative-driven first-person shooter series BioShock could have up to five sequels, though the company is taking care to ensure it won’t “cash in” on the franchise.

“If we spin [BioShock] the right way and get the right twist of innovation, we can make six parts of it, as Star Wars did,” 2K president Christoph Hartmann told MCV. “Look at Star Wars. It’s a fight between good and evil, just like BioShock.”

“But we have to be careful not to cash in,” he added. “Because [BioShock] is so story driven, the question obviously arises: how long can you do it without turning into The Matrix? The first Matrix was great, the second one was weird and the third one, you thought: ‘Who [making this] is on crack and who isn’t?’”

Continuing, the president explained the dangers: “I won’t name the company, but there was a great racing game years ago. They brought it back year-on-…

Seemingly confirming what was already known, Electronic Arts announced today that a downloadable demo for EA Black Box’s Skate 2 will be available on Xbox 360 tomorrow.

But what about the PlayStation 3 demo that many assumed would hit at the same time? Turns out the PlayStation Store download isn’t hitting until next Thursday, January 15.

The publisher also spilled some details on the demo’s actual content, promising a sample of the single-player game as well as two online modes: Hall of Meat, in which players attempt to rack up the most injuries, and the points-centric Spot Battle.

Not exactly great news to start out the year with, but it’s a good time to start fresh. A new year, a new beginning, and new opportunities. Hopefully, all those that had/lost a stake in the EGM/1up situation will carry on, and find great prosperity in 2009. At the very least, I hope my ‘EoD’ dedication can show just how much I respect I have for those impacted by this situation.

I’m off to bed, gang. I’ll see you all in a few, short hours. Here’s to a wonderful Wednesday for all.

While it may be a sad occurrence, I felt it was important to dedicate my ‘End of day’ thoughts to the big story of Tuesday.

A few months ago, we heard rumors that 1up was going to be sold off. A few hours ago, those rumors became true. With the selling of 1up to UGO Entertainment and parent Hearst Corporation, a big part of the game journalist scene is being impacted. Initial reports are stating that the 1up show and many of 1up’s podcasts are on their way out. We’ve heard some disputes on that information, but you can be sure that the audio/video side of 1up will definitely see some cutbacks.

Also unfortunate is the closure of EGM. For as long as I can remember, EGM has been one of the standouts of the gaming print media. I remember reading articles when I was just getting into gaming, as well as articles that were just printed a few weeks back. It’s quite strange to see one of the biggest gaming magazines disappear due to the immense popularity of the industry. Gaming got bigger and bigger as the years went on, and people found that they could get their gaming news every minute of every day, instead of just once a month. I still believe there is a place for print in the game industry, but how magazines are handled will really have to change. That’s another story for another day.

The worst part of all of this comes from the staff that worked at these outlets. From what we heard, 30+ people are out of their jobs. It’s not going to be easy to find a new place to call home, even if 1up/EGM had some of the biggest and brightest stars in game journalism. I can only say that I wish everyone the absolute best.

While the economy may be bad the world over, the game industry is doing quite well. Overall, in the UK, game sales were up 17% rise over 2007, which brought totals to 82.8 million. We know that there was success across all platforms, but Reuters makes special mention of the Wii within their blurb about the game industry. I am sure the Wii played a big part, as did the DS, and all other consoles available. It was a good year for gaming, even if the tail-end of 2008 was a bit sad, due to the closure of a few development houses. Let’s hope to see all those facing issues bounce back in a big way.

Long Beach resident Carol Monson, a 63-year-old member of Nifty After Fifty, does a victory dance after bowling a strike during a Nintendo Wii tournament against the Lakewood Teen Board at the Burns Community Center in Lakewood on Tuesday.

I could only hope to look one tenth that cool while doing a Wii victory dance. I also hope that I have an energy level that high when I’m 60+ years old!

This thing is pretty interesting…and scary at the same time. The Powermat is a mat that lets you charge all sorts of electronics. As you can see, there are hub-like devices that will allow for plugs to various devices, portable gaming platforms included. It may not be the most travel-friendly device, but it sure is cool.
