Viewtiful Joe and God Hand: Separated at Birth?

tumblr kz5p0mnxuu1qz9wb4

A cocky jerk fights to rescue a girl using a magical device on his arm that increases his strength and gives him access to supernatural, fourth-wall-breaking abilities. The girl, who is connected in some way with the source of the magical device, is being held by a group of four demonic characters.

Okay, which game is that summary talking about? For those that know both titles, the summary clearly relates to both of them! The same story for two games, yet we get completely different experiences.

ESA, Jack Thompson against Rhode Island bill aiming to jail retailers for selling M/AO games to minors

The ESA is opposed to this bill and we are educating those involved about the strong work of the ESRB and the self-regulatory successes that recently were lauded by the Federal Trade Commission. This bill is the same as all the other legislative proposals found unconstitutional by numerous federal courts. We are ensuring legislators understand and appreciate the fundamental problems that arise when trying to circumvent the first amendment rights of gamers and our industry’s innovative storytellers and creators. – Rich Taylor, ESA Senior Vice President of Communications & Industry Affairs

Since 1930, it has been unconstitutional to restrict the sale of entertainment products to anyone based upon a private sector standard, which the ESRB ratings are. There has to be a definition, description of the material and why it is offensive in the statute itself, so that a jury can apply a state/governmental standard, not a private sector rating. The Bill
won’t survive a court challenge, nor should it. I actually have litigated these issues. Seems to me you should report the fact that even Jack Thompson knows this one won’t fly. Think I’m not going to help the legislature get it right? – Jack Thompson

Jack Thompson and the ESA agreeing on something. I think hell has finally frozen over!

Doctor Who game for Wii/DS reconfirmed

Late last night, word came in that Nintendo was involved with a Doctor Who game for Wii and DS. Many people were skeptical, due to the originating source being The Sun. Today, we learn that the Doctor Who Wii/DS game is indeed the real deal, and it will be landing in Europe come this October. Koch Media will be handling the sales and marketing side of things, but they declined to comment any further. Thanks to ibbsters for the heads up!

Codemasters confirms DiRT 3 in the works

“Really, it’s all about letting the teams just innovate. There’s some great stuff coming from Birmingham that’s going into Dirt 3, and obviously you’ve seen Bodycount. I guess in today’s world, every day you’re dealing with people from all over the world. So it’s a British company and the last bastion of British publishing, and there is some pride in that, but it doesn’t take control of your life.” - Codemasters VP Gavin Cheshire

Not really a surprise to learn that another DiRT game is in the works. What I’d like to know is what platforms the title will be hitting. Hopefully another Wii game comes our way, and it gets a bit a spit-shine this time around.

Sakamoto – Metroid: Other M doesn’t feature an online component, can’t say that Metroid Dread didn’t exist

A portion of a Joystiq interview with producer Yoshio Sakamoto…

J: Will there be any online component to Other M? And, if not, why isn’t online a priority?

YS:There’s no online functionality in this title, and the reason for that is that Other M does not rely on that as one of the core design ideas. They’re thinking more about the single-player style that you’ve seen in all Metroid games up until this point. And one of the specific goals here is to convey the charm of Samus as a character and to bring forth several perspectives on what kind of personality she has and how she reacts to situations. So online wouldn’t really factor into that kind of character development as a core idea. If they were going to design a Metroid game with an online functionality it really would’ve had to have come in at the ground floor, when they come up with the design of the game.

J: Speaking of the core Metroid development team that last worked on the GBA games: There have been rumors of a game known as ‘Metroid Dread’ — purportedly a 2D Metroid game for DS. Was ‘Dread’ a real project?

YS: It seems we get a lot of questions about Metroid Dread, especially at interviews following E3 for example. But nothing’s ever been announced about this game; it’s all just been rumors so far, so we never know exactly how to respond to questions like this.

J: Then where does 2D Metroid development stand on DS?

YS: While there actually was a point where some teams were meeting to discuss if it was possible to create a 2D Metroid for DS using a relatively small team size, it’s not something that we ever really announced or thought of as “Metroid Dread.” But whenever people bring out that idea, we recognize that the basic concept is something that we can’t say never existed. But at the same time, we can’t of course make any official comment about a Metroid Dread–like project coming out.

Our main goal here is to, as I said earlier, first raise knowledge about the Metroid universe, and the Samus character, before we start to introduce different elements like online, or even going back to another handheld game for the next in the series. So there’s nothing coming immediately. We want to think about these new challenges first.

But, of course, we never say never.

Relive the classic age of video games with Game Hits for DS

Hilversum, Netherlands – March 12th 2010 – Foreign Media Games™ (FMG) announces GAMEHITS for Nintendo DS™, a collection of four of the best classic hit games from the birth of video gaming, the 1980s, reinvented for modern handheld gamers. These legendary pioneering games formed the foundation of today’s billion-dollar video games industry and the appeal has never been lost.

The redesign takes the much-loved classic gameplay of four greats and brings it bang up to date with full graphical overhaul. Additional features include multi-player modes, a variety of difficulty levels and full use of the unique control method options offered by the DS.

All four games have been redesigned in 3D and are just as addictive as ever. Players can eat their way through a labyrinth, shoot down spaceships, fill rows with the tessellating blocks, and direct a robot to cross safely. Players can also team up with a friend or battle against each other. The various difficulty levels make the GAMEHITS equally challenging for both young and old.

FMG Managing Director, Michel van Elmpt comments, “Those of us that have been in the games industry for many years fondly remember the classic age of early-1980s gaming. Since those halcyon days, a whole new generation of gamers have missed out. GAMEHITS sets out to bring these classics to this new audience.”

GAMEHITS for Nintendo DS will be released on 1st April 2010. Independent retail distribution is open.

Q Entertainment having secret meetings at GDC

Not too secretive to blab about on their official Twitter account, though…

“Successful secret GDC meeting #1 confirmed. Excited about the opportunities ahead!”

I’m still waiting to hear more on QJ for Wii, the music-based game that I was so excited for. I’m thinking that project is dead in the water. I’ll still keep hope alive, though!
