New Year’s Marathoning: Video Games or TV?

There’s no other time of the year where this would be a hard choice. You see, I love The Twilight Zone. No matter how many times I see an episode, watching it again is like seeing it for the first time. Round these parts, the SyFy Channel is very well known for its Twilight Zone marathon. It’s practically a given that it will be put on TV at some point in the day, especially if Mom B. is around.

Of course, New Year’s Eve/Day is a great time for gaming as well. Plenty of people around, lots of free time to get into multiple titles. Now we have to choose between which form of entertainment we want to overload on!

The Kartel’s Best of 2009: The Special Categories

Most Stylized Game

MadWorld

Even if graphically violent games aren’t your cup of tea, you have to at least admit that MadWorld is indeed visually striking. I can’t decide if the visuals turned gamers off and kept them away, or if it was just a case of bad marketing. MadWorld may not have been the end-all/be-all of gaming, but it definitely deserved more attention at retail.

The best industry quotes of 2009

“Games have been used for stimulation, but maybe it won’t be long until games are used for relaxation and even to fall asleep.”
- Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, presenting the Wii Vitality Sensor for the first time

I’m a huge Nintendo fan, and even I thought that quote was a bit strange to utter during E3. Not exactly the sort of thing you want to say to get the crowd riled up.

2010, A Look Ahead: Gaming trends for the new year

Music gaming falls off the charts

Music games may still be doing alright, but they aren’t pulling in the cash they were a year prior. Did the game industry exploit the popularity of music games too quickly? Are consumers fed up with their loads of drum sets, guitars and other peripheral clutter? 2010 doesn’t look to have anything that will change the opinion of jaded gamers, which certainly isn’t a good start for the music game sector.

‘Cinematic’ is anti-game

There are some games that are truly cinematic. They could stand up against some of Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters, and even outdo a few of them. While that’s all well and good, is going for a cinematic vibe something that games should be doing? Video games are their own medium, and they allow more interactivity than film, TV or literature combined. Perhaps we should stop applauding games that mimic the best of what other mediums pull off on a constant basis.

The decade of Zelda

Believe it or not, the last decade of Zelda kicked off with The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask. This could be one of the most contested entries in the series, with plenty of fans calling it the best adventure yet, and many others claiming that it’s an absolutely abysmal game. The Zelda titles to follow would surely bring controversy with them, from cel-shaded graphics to multiplayer outings, and even a jump from horse to train. It makes you wonder what the series is going to do next.

What’s it like to attend Blip Fest?

Well, if you were at the 2009 Blip Festival, you would have seen the action above live and in-person. That’s just one of many acts that hit the show floor, with a little bit of chiptune flavor for everyone. I need to get to one of these events!

9 in ‘09, number five: Shin Megami Tensei Strange Journey

We haven’t had a chance to play Shin Megami Tensei Strange Journey in the states just yet, but that’s going to change in 2010. You should definitely be excited about the game if you’re an SMT fan, as it sounds like this title is quite a big deal. I’m sure it’ll do quite well when it releases here. Just make sure you put aside a lot of free time for grinding!

eBay continues to profit off illegal merchandise, and clearly doesn’t care

Buying a video game off of eBay can be a very scary affair. Some would say that the idea is downright insane. Unless you are very, very familiar with the item you are looking to buy, it’s very easy to be swindled out of your hard-earned cash. Getting the game you wanted doesn’t really matter when you receive it and realize that it’s a bootleg copy from China. When is eBay going to step in and police this stuff?
