DiRT 2 DS – review

A portion of an NWR review…

Dirt 2 is by no means a bad game, but when compared to other games on the platform – more specifically from Firebrand themselves – it feels a little stale. While it has licensed vehicles and a stronger visual appeal, it lacks online play and a solid career mode. Regardless, Dirt 2 is a great addition to the Nintendo DS library.

Reader GWX tried to enjoy the Cars Race o’ Rama demo on the Nintendo Channel. He downloaded it to his DS, and the demo refuses to move past the Nintendo logo. Has anyone else had this trouble?

Suzak implements interesting anti-piracy measures in Umihara Kawase DS

Umihara Kawase DS is now out in Japan, and there are people pirating the game left and right. It turns out the developer Suzak anticipated this reaction, and have added in some very unique anti-piracy measures. Check out what some of the pirates had to say about the bootleg version…

“The physics seem fine, but the fishing lure starts acting wonky after ten minutes, refusing to hold onto fish or platforms.”

“If you play the SNES version of the game when the anti-piracy lockout is active, the first cutscene clearly shows the fish hook is unable to latch onto walls and Umihara Kawase falls into a pit. The developers are evil.”

Basically, the game is made completely unplayable. Of course, there’s already a work-around for this issue, but at least some people will be halted!

Roles for the Elderly in Video Games

How many games let you take on the role of an older character? Outside of Metal Gear Solid 4, it’s pretty hard to think of an example, isn’t it? It’s a shame that we don’t see more games that pay tribute to/respect the elderly. If Nintendo wants to take one of their game characters and turn them into an 80-year-old tottering coot, I’m all over it! I’d love to play as grandpa Link!

Time to spice up the Zelda formula?

I think this is something that even the most hardcore fans can agree on. It’s about time that the Big N spice up the Zelda series. It’s not like everything has to be completely overhauled, but there are definitely some elements that could do with some revamping. Will Nintendo finally decide to change things up with the next console Zelda? I’d like to think so, but I’ll keep my fingers crossed just incase.

Spector talks about taking Disney’s legacy and twisting it into something that’s both familiar and completely new

“We want to honour Disney’s creative legacy; there’s 80 years of creativity here; we all know it, we all love it, we all grew up with it. But if we’re going to bring Mickey to an audience that hasn’t really thought about him as a hero for many years we can’t just give people Sleeping Beauty’s Castle and When You Wish upon a Star. We need to come up with something that’s maybe a little more relevant and a little more appealing to a modern audience. We have to give people a new twist on things – take things that are completely familiar to you, we all know them and all love them, and give them a little bit of a dark edge and a difference. We give you the pleasure of familiarity, and then we yank the rug from underneath you.” – Warren Spector

I think Epic Mickey is definitely going to be shocking in many ways. You’ll be seeing characters that you’re familiar with, but in ways that see completely unconventional. Taking classic figures and presenting them in new and interesting ways. It should be a fun adventure to go on!
