“…it’s the addition of the Forge level editor and the saved films that give the game an even longer set of legs, legs that will probably keep you running at full speed until Bungie figures out where, exactly, to go from here.”

–Jeff Gerstmann, GameSpot

“Each brutal kill, explosion, and epic triumph can be relived ad nauseam here, making the saved films feature possibly the best new addition to a game series — ever.”

–Greg Orlando, Yahoo!Games

“Sure, no one aspect of the game is life-changing on its own, but perhaps the package as a whole is.”

–Dan Hsu, 1UP

“Despite Halo 3 being more combat evolved than combat revolutionised, Halo 3 deserves a 10 because it’s the most complete FPS experience ever released.”

–Wesley Yin-Poole, Pro-G

“Of course, many multiplayer games are only as good as their maps, and Halo 3 features a great blend of levels: big and small, light and dark, symmetrical and assymmetrical, it’s all in there.”

–Will Tuttle, Team Xbox

“There’s no first-person shooter on 360 that can equal Halo 3’s blend of cinematic action, adrenaline-pumping shootouts, and male- (and female)-bonding gameplay.”

–Hilary Goldstein, IGN

“By the time you’re through with Halo 3, you’ll have witnessed insane zealotry at its finest as well as the best Warthog driving level ever.”

–Gabe Graziani, GameSpy

“While Halo 3 doesn’t do a lot innovatively, it does everything right. They’ve had years to perfect their Halo craft, and they did it damn well this time around.”

–Brendon Lindsey, GamerNode

“The soundtrack is still incredibly done and rises and falls appropriately, giving the game a cinematic feel at the correct times.”

–D’Marcus Beatty, Cheat Code Central

“Halo 3 certainly won’t be the greatest game ever released and it won’t fulfill its premise without an Xbox Live connection, but as a game and multiplayer package for those who just want Halo, Bungie have hit the nail on the head.”

–Jeremy Jastrzab, PALGN AU

“In being so uncompromising in certain ways, in offering incredible vistas and epic clashes on a whole new scale of grandiose; in delivering all of that with spectacular art and a profound soundtrack; finally, for offering 4-player co-op, it goes without saying that Halo 3 deserves to be in your collection of 360 titles.”

–Uros Jojic, ActionTrip

“The visuals, guns, vehicles, enemies, set-pieces, musical score… they’ve all been cranked up to 11 to create an experience up there with the best sci-fi properties.”

–Gavin Ogden, Computer and Video Games

“The single player is bigger and brawnier than anything that’s been attempted on a console before. The multiplayer, which already shadowed the competition, has improved to the point of ridiculousness.”

–Charlie Barratt, GamesRadar US

Fatal Inertia

Publisher:
Koel
Developer:
Koel
Genre:
Racing
Release Date:
Sep 11, 2007

Buy it at Amazon

“The imaginative weapons and skillful AI give Fatal Inertia a good deal of replayability, but it’s easy to become frustrated by the lackluster speed and ruthlessly acute physics.”

–Brian Ekberg, GameSpot

“…the search for racing carnage should probably lead back to superior franchises like FlatOut and Burnout.”

–Rob Fahey, EuroGamer

“For a game dependent on relaying a sense of blistering speed to its audience, Fatal Inertia comes with far too many framerate issues.”

–David Craddock, IGN

“This run-of-the-mill racing game slowly goes nowhere once you get out of arcade mode. But at least it looks pretty.”

–Rob Taylor, GamesMaster UK, GamesRadar

NHL 2K8

Take-Two Interactive
Developer:
2K Sports
Genre:
Sports
Release Date:
Sep 10, 2007

Buy it at Amazon

“Unfortunately, cumbersome controls aren’t the only cracks in 2K8’s ice. Checking is a mess …and passing feels a tad sluggish.”

–Bryan Intihar, 1UP

“Between the sharper visuals, better-than-ever franchise mode, and top-notch online options, it’s exactly what the series needed.”

–Richard Grisham, GamesRadar US

“2K8 lost a step when it made its bizarre control-scheme changes and failed to really improve much of the rest of the game beyond the franchise mode.”

–Alex Navarro, GameSpot

“It sucks that the interface is clunky and brings about memories of spreadsheets and that people are going to scoff at the new system, but if you play hockey games for how real they feel, you’ve found a winner.”

–Greg Miller, IGN

“In the end, NHL 2K8 is still a blast, once you get used to the strange new control setup.”

DK Jungle Climber

Publisher:
Nintendo
Developer:
Paon Corp.
Genre:
Action
Release Date:
Sep 11, 2007

Buy it at Amazon

“While it could’ve relied on the sheer novelty of its control scheme, it does a smart job of fleshing out the gameplay and offering a well-balanced challenge once the novelty has worn off.”

–Ryan Davis, GameSpot

“The development team stuck to its guns with the original concept and fleshed it out with new levels, new elements, and more stuff to beef up the variety and to toughen things up.”

–Craig Harris, IGN

“Jungle Climber takes the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mindset by emulating the look of the SNES Donkey Kong titles, and it’s far better off for it.”

–Dan Ryckert, Lawrence

“The unique control scheme makes for an interesting change and a lot of fun, while the extra challenge modes provide incentive for much replay.”

–Aaron Kaluszka, Nintendo World Report

“It won’t set the DS world on fire, but it’s another solid entry in the line on nontraditional DK games and definitely worth a look for platformer fans.”

–Nick Suttner, 1UP

“The swinging play mechanic helps keep things fresh and allows for a lot of technique that you don’t normally see in a platformer.”

–Phil Theobald, GameSpy

“Swinging from peg to peg could easily have gotten old very quickly, but the short levels are well designed and offer plenty of reasons for return visits.”

–Adam Rosenberg, UGO

“This banana-gathering adventure is shockingly awesome, given its whacked-out premise: Donkey and pals try to get the coveted Crystal Banana so some aliens can make it back home.”

–Mark Green, GamesRadar, Xbox 360 World UK

“The game is short, easy and has an ultra lame story, but Donkey Kong’s latest adventure is not only extremely fun, it is a great way to make the days go by faster while you wait for The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass to comes out in October.”

–Jason Nilmer, Gamers’ Temple

“The variety of obstacles and challenges really helps to make the simple gameplay mechanic to keep from bogging down and growing stale; even after extended and repeated play.”

–Jeff Rivera, DS Advanced

Lair

Publisher:
SCEA
Developer:
Factor 5
Genre:
Action
Release Date:
Aug 30, 2007

Buy it at Amazon

“It really seems like the developers forced themselves to stick with a barely-workable control scheme just to make use of the PS3’s flashy new tilt sensor support.”

–Kevin VanOrd, GameSpot

“Lair potential never materializes into a cohesive gameplay experience. What could have been ultra cool, flying battling dragons becomes cold.”

–Jimmy, ExtremeGamer

“Lair is not a broken game, just one that overcompensates to hide all its flaws rather than fix them.”

–Robert Manuel, G4TV

“Not only is the game frustrating to control, but the camera is just downright awful. ”

–Brendon Lindsey, GamerNode

“All the mystique and intrigue surrounding dragons is completely lost in this game. Dragons are nothing more than mindless mounts, every bit as common and mundane as horses are on a medieval battlefield.”

–Jonathan Marx, Cheat Code Central

“Lair however has a gritty presentation and coolness factor that may just convince some gamers to stick with it, and sticking with the game is worth it.”

–Kareem Harper, Underground Online

“The artwork and environments can be awesome to behold, especially when running at 1080p. Unfortunately this is coupled with a shakey framerate and odd graphical hitches that make the overall value drop significantly.”

–Ron Burke, Gaming Trend

“As it stands, Lair is an exercise in futility, a poorly designed and frustrating experience that questions how loose of a definition we should give to the word “game”.”

–Chris Jensen, GameAlmgihty

Stranglehold

>

Publisher:
Midway
Developer:
Midway
Genre:
Modern Shooter
Release Date:
Sep. 5, 2007

Buy it at Amazon

“Sure, it gets repetitive at times, it’s got a few design quirks, and the multiplayer is borderline irrelevant. But there’s enough solid, exciting action here for shooter fans to sink their teeth into.”

–Alex Navarro, GameSpot

“It’s fast-paced, has a lot of action, and the environment makes sure each chapter is never quite the same when you go back through to beat it again — Stranglehold is the ultimate guy’s game.”

–Brendon Lindsey, GamerNode

“Low-res textures, lousy water effects, and a finicky camera just don’t pass the next-gen sniff test.”

–Duke Ferris, Game Revolution

“In a nutshell, it’s safe to say that with Stranglehold, you will be getting exactly what you paid for: over-the-top arcade action with a Hong Kong twist and trademark Woo choreography.”

–Uros Jojic, ActionTrip

“While there are problems with the game, you will quickly forget what those are as you continuously mow down your enemies with various execution techniques.”

–Matthew Walker, Cheat Code Central

“When it shines, it shines brightly. During intensive fire fights it can look stunning, with blood spurting, fire raging, and bullet tracers carving up the view.”

–John Walker, PC Gamer UK, Games Radar

“Ultimately, I think your enjoyment of this game all comes down to your love of Woo. It’s like an amusement park for fans and I’m glad I went on the ride, even though it only lasted about 10 hours.”

–Chris Jensen, Game Almighty

“While Stranglehold doesn’t revolutionize action games, or even any one part of action games, it’s a solid game with an authentic cinematic style, great use of Chow Yun-Fat, excellent action, and destructible environments.”

–Jeff Buckland, Atomic Gamer
